Yesterday, 02/20/2026, I was at an intersection at the periphery of my neighborhood. I was the first in line at the red light to proceed forward when the light was to turn green.
I must have been looking elsewhere other than right in front of me when I heard the skid of tires, then the deafening bang of bumper on metal. Focusing my eyes right in the middle of the intersection, I saw a bumper and other debris mid intersection. I saw a small blue car rolling forward...minus their bumper. Were they the ones that got hit? Or hit another car?
The light turned green and I proceeded slowly around the accident debris and parked on the grass. A woman pulled up behind me and we both said, "I'll call 911!" I look to my right and saw a car t-boned by a larger work van. I ran over there to assist. No first responders had arrived yet.
I approach the driver's side and that the work van was flush against, preventing the door from opening, though I saw the driver trying to open it. The deployed airbags obstructed my view of the passengers. Then, a young blonde woman exited the passenger side. She's pregnant! Her husband exited right behind her. I ran to her and gently lead her to the side of the road.
I asked her name. Megan. I asked how far along she was. 36 weeks. She and her husband were on their way to an OBGYN appointment when they were t-boned, not by the work van they had landed against, but by the little blue car I'd seen rolling slowly through the intersection immediately after the skid and BANG!
This impact had spun the young couples car multiple times and they landed at the front bumper of the work van. The work men were unharmed, but visibly shaken.
Megan needed to sit down and I assisted her gently down. I told her my name is Gina and I do Reiki. I asked if I could give her Reiki while we waited for the first responders to check her out. Her eyes spoke volumes as she managed a shaky, "Yes."
I placed my right hand gingerly on her back and invoked the ancient healing modality's energy. I asked her some questions about herself to distract her from what had just happened. Her dad had passed recently in October. It'd been a hard year for her and her husband (who had run across the street to ensure the car that hit them hadn't taken off). And now this had happened.
Megan was feeling some lower abdominal, neck and shoulder pain. The police were coming in droves by then, sirens blazing. The fire truck arrived and when they made their way to Megan, I told her I was heading out.
"You and your baby will be just fine...", I reassured her.
"Thank you so much!", Megan responded. Her husband thanked me as well as I began walking away.
Moral of the story...you never know what you will be faced with on a daily basis. If strangers find themselves in need of help right in front of you, your calm, giving presence alone is enough. If you do Reiki, ask permission if you can give it to someone who is hurt and waiting for first responders to arrive.
It does help.
